The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) announced it is updating its Food Chemicals Codex with new methods for certain natural food and supplement ingredients.

Agora Food Sciences now offers Chaveka Salvia Hispanica L seeds. This heart-healthy ingredient supports healthy cholesterol and is an excellent source of fiber and omega-3, says the company. The highly bioavailable, water-dispersible ingredient is suitable for baked goods, liquids, chicken breading and more. Several versions of the Chaveka formula are available, including those that allow for a high-fiber claim, for an omega-3 claim, for both claims and more. Custom blends are available. Chaveka is made with a “reduced pathogen process,” yielding a final product that is 99% free of microbiological activity.

FutureCeuticals, Inc. now has a line of probiotics, Lacticeuticals, which is Orthodox Union Kosher. According to the company, the “line is based upon various strains of lactic-acid producing bacteria, alone, or in combination with other carefully selected functional ingredients.” Some strains include bifidobacterium bifidum, lactobacillus rhamnosus and lactoccus lactis.

Nutraceuticals International LLC now offers Progestive, a new probiotic made with Bacillus Coagulans bacteria. According to the company, research has shown that it may improve vaginal flora and enhance the immune system. It is offered as a six billion and 15 billion strain.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is seeking comments on a document aimed at helping small supplement makers better understand good manufacturing practices for dietary supplements, which they are now obligated to follow.

Valensa International and Parry Nutraceuticals introduced a premium coated spirulina called Pur-Blue. “The ingredient uses an all-natural phycocyanin extract coating to mask the flavor of the native spirulina—offering companies interested in marketing spirulina to a broader range of consumers an attractive, neutral- tasting product that can appeal to the pickiest of eaters,” says the company.
