Witches, wizards, and sugar! It’s all good.Life isn’t about extremism or denying oneself time after time. But why not do a little something to balance things out?

Every writer and blogger in the food space is sharing their favorite treat recipes at this spooky time of year. Even those with specialty diets will get their fix — whether it’s gluten-free, dairy-free, diabetic-friendly, or otherwise.

The common denominator will be a boost in sugar, even if it’s natural sugar. Why not get ahead of it and take some counter-measures? One to balance blood sugar levels and one for overall pH balance.

SUPPLEMENT #1 - CINNAMON - Terrific to balance blood sugar levels

Can be taken several ways:
  1. Convenient pill form.
  2. Boil cinnamon sticks and use to make tea. Cinnamon pumpkin spiced latté is a treat in itself! How fantastic that it can also balance the treat that’s served with it.
  3. Sprinkle cinnamon powder onto foods and don’t limit it to apple pie. That morning chia bowl will probably taste even better with cinnamon and so will many smoothies. One of my favorite smoothies is banana, blueberry, almond milk, cardamom, and cinnamon.
SUPPLEMENT #2 - LIQUID CHLOROPHYLL - Sunshine in a bottle

It’s easy to get ultra-scientific when talking health. As a confessed science geek, I’m usually guilty. But sometimes it’s simpler than that. Sometimes it’s just the common sense of:“I’m eating more sweets and treats this weekend than I usually do in a whole month, maybe my system is going to get a bit of a shock.”Which is okay, life isn’t about extremism, but why not use a simple solution to get ahead of it?

I call chlorophyll “sunshine in a bottle” because it’s a super concentrated form of the wonderful power of fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s a way of photosynthesizing your body, which is a natural way to alkalinize your blood and provide balance overall. It’s like a 12-ounce green juice in a tablespoon.

SWEET TIP:Opt for maple syrup over all other sweeteners; it has the lowest glycemic index. And if you need something sticky for your truffles, pies and cupcakes, dates do the trick every time.

Happy Halloween! Stay safe and healthy

p.s. These are great supplements to incorporate all year round, but particularly a good idea during all holidays. I have my cousin’s 2- and 4-year-old on chlorophyll water as of last week, knowing the mountain of sweets their grandparents, godparents, neighbors, and daycare are about to unleash on them. And my cousin is adding cinnamon to their little hot chocolates and blueberry smoothies.
