Phoenix, AZ—The Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation announced in a press release that it will donate $3 million to nonprofit organizations that specialize in nutrition education and fresh food access. This year alone, Sprouts will award 118 Neighborhood Grants totaling $725,000 to nonprofit organizations ranging from $2,500 to $10,000.

The Foundation also has committed to multi-year grants including:

  • A $561,000 multi-year investment to Life Lab (Santa Cruz, CA), which will strengthen and expand its service model along with forming a national conference in 2021 to unite educators and leaders in the gardening industry
  • A $375,000 multi-year investment to Sage Garden Project (San Diego, CA) to sustain and expand successful school programs
  • A $150,000 grant to support Out Teach (Phoenix, AZ), which will create a new learning garden.

To celebrate, Sprouts and the Foundation will host the second annual Day of Service on November 9 with 40 volunteer events from coast to coast. Sprouts volunteers will plant garden beds, hydroponic gardens, coordinate incubator farms, family gardens, and farmers markets, hold cleanups, tree-planting projects, learn about composting, sustainability, gardening and upcycling. Lyndsey Waugh, Executive Director of the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation, notes that their mission is to focus on the young and their exposure to nutrition education; specifically, the Foundation helps to promote cooking, gardening and access to nutritious produce in food deserts. “Central to Sprouts’ identity is giving back to the communities we operate in,” she said, “and the Day of Service gives team members the opportunity to engage with the organizations the Foundation supports firsthand.
