Hazelnut Improves Vitamin E and Magnesium in Adults

Hazelnut consumption increased the concentration of the urinary α-tocopherol (vitamin E) metabolite α-CEHC and serum concentrations of magnesium among a group of 32 men and women in one study recently published by The Journal of Nutrition. Inadequate consumption of both vitamin E and magnesium is a health concern for older populations generally associated with the prevalence of age-related diseases. During a 16-week intervention period, participants consumed approximately 57 grams of hazelnut per day and had blood and urine samples taken at the beginning and end of the period. The findings showed increased concentrations that suggest consuming hazelnut improves biomarkers of vitamin E among older adults and should be part of a healthy diet.
