Washington, D.C.—Following a request for stakeholder input, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) submitted comments to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements’ (ODS) draft of the agency’s Five-Year Strategic Plan for 2022-2026.
ODS asked stakeholders whether there are emerging health issues that ODS can help address, and to comment on any existing knowledge gaps ODS can help address that are not included in the current plan. ODS also asked if there anything it can do differently to meet the needs of its stakeholders.
Andrea Wong, Ph.D., CRN’s Senior Vice President, Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, responded on behalf of the association. Dr. Wong’s feedback: “As industry is an important stakeholder in the dietary supplement space, we recommend specific language be created in the strategic plan on how to develop and maintain two-way communication and potential partnerships with industry members. Much of the language is one-way, coming from ODS to industry, but does not appear to be encouraged from industry to ODS, beyond commenting on the strategic plan. Having an industry advisory council with members from companies of all sizes, along with trade associations, could support two-way communication.”
