Remembering Barry Meltzer
Barry Meltzer, co-owner of San Francisco Herb & Natural Food Company and co-founder of the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) passed away on August 22, 2013.

He had been active in the natural products industry since the 1970s. In 1982, Meltzer co-founded AHPA as a non-profit organization focused on promoting the responsible commerce of herbal products and improving marketing opportunities for health food companies.

“Barry was a supplement industry pioneer and he touched the lives of many in the industry,” said AHPA President Michael McGuffin. “Barry was an active participant in founding AHPA in 1982, but more than an industry leader and advocate, he was also a good friend, and his smile and humor will be missed.”

Meltzer’s company, San Francisco Herb & Natural Food Co., has been in business for over 40 years, and its Nature’s Herb Company product line of botanicals is celebrating its 94th anniversary this year.

The American Botanical Council has established the Barry Meltzer Memorial Fund that will help support ABC’s Internship Program. To make a donation, contact development@herbalgram.org.

Nutrition 21 Founder Passes Away
Herb Boynton, founder and former president of Nutrition 21, passed away at the age of 88 in late August.

Boynton founded Nutrition 21 in 1979 and retired from the company in 1996. The firm is credited with introducing chromium and selenium to the U.S. nutrition market, and its selnium was used in the 1996 Nutrition Prevention of Cancer Trial.

“Herb was a kind and brilliant man who wanted to help everyone become healthier,” said Richard A. Passwater, Ph.D., science editor at WholeFoods Magazine.

Boynton often lectured at industry events (frequently about the proper balance of sodium to potassium), wrote several papers and co-authored the book, The Salt Solution.
