New York, NY—Citicoline may be what it takes to slow the progression of glaucoma in some individuals, according to Italian researchers who published their data in Ophthalmologica.

The scientists (affiliated with University of Milan, Milan, University of Rome, University of Genoa and Fondazione G.B. Bietti per l’Oftalmologia) collected information on 41 patients with progressing glaucoma of at least –1 dB/year and gave them 500 mg of citicoline supplements daily (as Cognizin Citicoline from Kyowa Hakko, based here) for two years. During this time, the individuals had four eye exams. The researchers say that by the end of the study, citicoline slowed the disease progression, with the patients average glaucoma progression reduced to –0.15 dB/year. There was also was a statistically significant decrease in intraocular pressure noted.
