Natural Grocers Supports FDA's Ruling
"While all of us at Natural Grocers appreciate the fact that the FDA has revoked the use of brominated vegetable oil in food products, we knew it was a problematic ingredient from the start. Its only purpose was to impact the functionality of the food, not to benefit consumers by being an ingredient that was good for our health and wellbeing" said Executive Vice President of Natural Grocers, Heather Isely, in response to the FDA's recent ruling against the use of Brominated Vegetable Oil in food.
The largest family-operated organic and natural grocery retailer has made it a point to not carry any products containing brominated vegetable oil (BVO) due to concerns over its harmful effects. On July 2nd, the FDA shared those concerns after it had evaluated the results of studies that were conducted with the help of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and concluded that the use of BVO in food was no longer considered safe. Chemically modified fats such as BVO have been used throughout the food industry in order to increase the shelf life of products and help produce highly processed foods and commercial soft drinks.

EpiCor Postbiotic Supports Kid's Immune Health
A clinical study for EpiCor postbiotic providing immune support to children between the ages of 4 and 12 has been published in the journal of Pediatric Research. Conducted by Cargill and KGK Science, the new randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled research studied 256 Canadian children, between the ages of 4 and 12, during cold and flu season—Sept 2022 through April 2023. Already backed by over 15 published studies, the new research concluded that a daily 500mg dose of EpiCor postbiotic led to:
- For a period lasting 84 days, caregivers of children that had received EpiCor reported statistically significant reductions in cold and flu symptom severity compared to those taking placebo (P<0.05).
- During the same period, participants given EpiCor registered lower severity scores on symptoms like sore throat, muscle aches and pains, during 84 days of supplementation compared to those receiving a placebo supplement. (P≤0.05).
- Supplementation with EpiCor limited the need for traditional cold and flu medication. Children who had received a placebo were nearly two times (1.7) more likely to use prescription or over-the-counter medications over the 84-day period compared to those who had been given EpiCor.
- A daily regiment of 500mg of EpiCor was safe and well tolerated in a population of healthy children ages 4 through 12.
“With a strong history of clinical success, this new research on immune support in children continues to underscore Cargill's unwavering commitment to developing science-backed solutions that aim to positively impact people’s health and wellness across all life stages,” said Dr. Justin Green, Ph.D., Director of Scientific Affairs at Cargill.
