History.After reading the extensive research done in Finland about the benefits of xylitol, Dr. Lon Jones developed a xylitol nasal spray to treat his patients with persistent upper-respiratory infections. He successfully treated his granddaughter’s ear infections, and soon began dispensing the solution to other patients with ear, nose and throat issues. The results were astounding. In 2000, Nathan Jones, Dr. Jones’ son, founded Xlear Inc. to make the nasal spray commercially available.

Xylitol.Xylitol is a naturally occurring, five-carbon polyol, or sugar alcohol, found in many natural sources, and is produced in small amounts by the human body. For large productions, it is derived from birch trees and corn cobs. It has the same sweetness as sucrose, but has 40% fewer calories and none of the negative tooth decay or insulin-release effects of sugar. With a glycemic index of seven, compared to that of sucrose’s 68, xylitol is safe and recommended for diabetics.

Xylitol has been used in foods since the 1960s and decades of clinical testing confirm that itXlearis the best sweetener for teeth. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized the statement that regular use of xylitol may reduce the risk of tooth decay. Sugar-free chewing gums and candies made with xylitol have received official endorsements from various national and international dental associations.

Xylitol works in a number of ways in the body. It effectively draws moisture to tissue surfaces, helping to keep the nasal tissues moist and the airway open. It has also been shown in numerous studies to prevent bacteria from adhering to tissue. Without this adhesion, they can’t thrive.
