Rockville, MD—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is asking for input on threshold levels for all eight major food allergens (milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts and soybeans).
Establishing safe levels for these allergens make for big changes for food manufacturers. Such thresholds would help the agency better decide what to do if a product was unintentionally contaminated with an unlabeled allergen; simplify exemptions from allergen labeling; and help make it easier for consumers to make choices while shopping for foods.
Public comments are sought on safe food allergen threshold levels until February 7, 2013. Comments can be recorded at www.regulations.gov to docket FDA-2012-N-0711.
