Portland, OR—Bob Moore, founder and president of Bob’s Red Mill presented naturopathic medical students with $15,000 in scholarships, for expressing their take on a particular grain of their choosing on youTube. Students from seven accredited naturopathic programs in the united States and Canada were called to submit videos featuring the health benefits of grains on the popular site.
Three finalists then were selected to give a speech about why they believe food is medicine. Derek Andre, second-year National College of Natural Medicine student, came in first place for his piece on oats and gluten contamination and had this to say, “True gluten-free oats are hard to come by because nearly all grain manufacturers produce their oats in facilities or on machinery that they also produce gluten containing products on. This practice inevitably leads to gluten-contamination of the oats.”
Bob, along with his wife Charlee were impressed with each student’s passion for healthy living and awarded each finalist with a $5,000 scholarship instead of the original scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $5,000.
