Illnesses started on dates ranging from November 5, 2019, to November 15, 2019, and have been reported in three states. The source of the ingredients in the kits have not yet been determined; there may be romaine from the Salinas, CA growing region, but there may also be romaine from other regions. Speaking of the Salinas-based outbreak, according to theCDC’s latest update, there have been 102 reported cases in 23 states, with 58 hospitalizations, including 10 from hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

E. colisymptoms often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Some people may get a low fever. Symptoms usually begin three to four days after consuming the bacteria, but illness can start anywhere from one to ten days after exposure. Most people get better within five to seven days. Those who suspect they have contracted this infection should contact a healthcare provider if they have diarrhea lasting more than three days, a fever higher than 102° F, or frequent vomiting to the point where they cannot keep liquids down.
