Company Description
Proprietary Nutritionals, Inc. (PNI) is a major global marketer and distributor of science-based specialty ingredients. A division of Pharmachem Laboratories, Inc., PNI has achieved success by procuring breakthrough products and developing strategic worldwide marketing partnerships. PNI canvasses the nutraceuticals industry for ingredients that are ripe for brand building. Once PNI formalizes a partnership with a client, the company works to fully develop the identity of the product from the conception stage, including logos and trademarks. PNI then focuses on developing distribution channels so it can reach consumers. Once distribution has been established, a consumer awareness program is put in place. In addition, PNI helps companies develop trade and retail tools to educate potential clients about the product and how to sell it. PNI’s media relations team will contact media directly with the product message using professional media kits for TV, newspaper, magazine and radio.
Key Market Areas
Proprietary Nutritional Inc.'s products focus on condition-specific support, and each is backed by credible research demonstrating safety, efficacy and mechanism of action, allowing our partner companies to formulate based on credibility and trust. Market areas are dietary supplements, and functional foods and beverages.
Major Products
In January 2009, PNI assumed the exclusive worldwide distribution rights for Sytrinol®, a patented formula proven to help lower cholesterol naturally. Developed after 12 years of research, Sytrinol is derived from citrus bioflavonoids and palm tocotrienols. It has been shown to reduce total cholesterol by up to 30% after just 30 days in a recent double-blind, placebo-controlled published study, which compares very favorably to traditional cholesterol lowering drugs.
Cran-Max® cranberry concentrate is another offering within the PNI family of brands. Cran-Max is the most potent, most clinically studied cranberry concentrate in the marketplace today. It is the only cranberry supplement that contains the full phytonutrient value of the whole cranberry. It is made using a patented process called Bio-Shield® that allows the active ingredients of the cranberry to survive acids in the stomach for maximum effect. A recent clinical study, published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, has shown that the administration of Cran-Max was comparable to the commonly prescribed antibiotic, trimethoprim, for the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections in older women.
Celadrin® is a natural ingredient for joint health composed of a proprietary blend of special fatty acids. It has been shown in multiple studies to reduce discomfort and improve mobility in people suffering from a variety of joint, muscle and tendon-related ailments. A study published in the Journal of Rheumatology found that Celadrin, taken orally, provided an improvement in knee range of motion and overall function over placebo.
PNI’s other leading ingredients include: the Berry-Max™ family of fruit concentrates (which includes Cran-Max®, Blue-Max®, Bil-Max®, Elder-Max®, cherry and pomegranate concentrates); Benexia Chia Seed; InoCell® (Inositol plus Cal-Mag IP6); and Perluxan hops extract.
What’s New?
A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (2011;171(14): 1270–78) concluded that a prescription drug may be more effective than cranberry capsules in preventing recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs), but the drug also increased antibiotic resistance.
The study compared 221 women with recurrent UTIs who took either trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMS, 480 mg at night, plus one placebo capsule twice daily) or cranberry capsules (Cran-Max® cranberry concentrate from Proprietary Nutritionals, Inc., 500 mg twice daily, plus one placebo tablet at night) for 12 months.
While there were fewer clinical recurrences with the drug group, the antibiotic resistance rates tripled in the pathogens found in patients taking the drug. One month into the study, antibiotic resistance for Escherichia coli was higher than 85% in the TMP-SMX group, but less than 30% in the cranberry capsule group.
In a commentary accompanying the study, Bill J. Gurley, Ph.D., University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, said, “Such a marked reduction in antibiotic resistance certainly favors the therapeutic potential of cranberry as a natural UTI preventative.”
