Aposton the Facebook page of Charlotte's mother, Paige Figi, explains though Charlotte tested negative for the virus, members of the family had been battling various symptoms for a month, so Charlotte was treated as a likely COVID-19 case at Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs.
The Colorado Sunreported that if Charlotte's death is verified by public health officials as being related to COVID-19, she will be the youngest life to be claimed by the virus in Colorado.
Charlotte's Life and Legacy
The impact Charlotte Figi had on the world will not be forgotten. Charlotte had Dravet syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy. In 2012 at the age of 5, she was the first to try the Stanleys Brother’s CBD hemp extract, which was later named “Charlotte’s Web” due to the seizure relief Charlotte experienced.News of her experience with CBD spread when Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Chief Medical Correspondent at CNN, met with the Figi family. Dr. Gupta saw the value of cannabinoids, and shared this news.
"Charlotte changed the world," Dr. Gupta wrote inhis memorialto Charlotte on CNN. "She certainly changed my world and my mind. She opened my eyes to the possibility of cannabis being a legitimate medicine. She showed me that it worked to stop her crippling seizures, and that it was the only thing that worked. She was proof that withholding a medication, even one that comes in the form of a plant, would be as much a moral failing as a medical one. She set me ona journey throughout the worldto visit the scientists, the researchers and the countless patients just like her. She inspired me to dig deeper and not simply dismiss this plant as I had done in the past."
Charlotte, Dr. Gupta added, "was more than an individual, she was an entire movement wrapped up into a sweet girl with a big smile and an even bigger heart."
The Charlotte's Web Family remembered Charlotte in a movingtribute, sharing, "Charlotte was ten feet tall and carried the world on her shoulders. Inspiring is a lacking word, as are courageous and vivacious and strong and beautiful. She was divine. She grew, cultivated by a community, protected by love, demanding that the world witness her suffering so that they might find a solution. She rose every day, awakening others with her courage, and with that smile that infected your spirit at the cellular level."
