Through the years, they have fine-tuned the program, providing seed to the farmers, training them to grow herbs sustainably and cleanly, and guaranteeing a minimum purchase price no matter what Mother Nature throws at them. Farmers are taught techniques to naturally deter insects such as by growing pest-repellent plants among the herbs and given irrigation support when rainfall doesn’t cooperate. When herb prices go up, Sami-Sabinsa pays more for the harvest than the contracted amount.
Reforestation is a logical next step in Sami-Sabinsa’s sustainability commitment. With a view to ex situ conservation of the highly valued but neglected tree species Pterocarpus marsupium (Indian kino tree) two years ago the company initiated and funded a project that planted over 166,600 trees on 250 acres of forest land, which will be maintained over ten years into maturity. The award-winning program was recently expanded to encompass a larger area growing more seedlings.
