HG&H Pharmaceuticals (Pty) Ltd is the nutraceutical arm of the Halls Group, formed in 2006 to conduct research on Sceletium tortuosum as an ingredient. The seed was planted when a South African doctor and botanist that came across a reference to the Sceletium plant in a book titled “Narcotics Plants”, by William Emboden. His interest to learn more about this plant’s powerful properties saw the birth of the company.
The ensuing research revealed that extracts of Sceletium, and an active component isolated from the plant were found to be potent 5-HT uptake inhibitors. A patent based on this activity was filed and granted. The ancient South African plant is now a botanical ingredient sourced from Sceletium tortuosum and/or Sceletium crassicaule, trademarked and marketed as Zembrin®.
Zembrin® is the only patented, standardised and clinically studied Sceletium spp. extract on the market with evidence to show that is improves cognition, enhances mood and reduces anxiety. Zembrin® is cultivated exclusively for HG&H Pharmaceuticals (Pty) Ltd (the proprietary owners of Zembrin®) and no others.
