It’s surprising to many that the ECS was only discovered in 1988. The origin of the ECS discovery is Dr. Raphael Mechoulam who was researching how marijuana THC works in the body and brain. Dr. Mechoulam named this system the EndoCannabinoid System (ECS). “Endo” means within the body. “Cannabinoid” highlights the role the cannabis plant played in this discovery.
This is a confusing topic for many. In this interview we are going to give you a great introduction into the ECS. The more you understand the better choices you will make. My guest is Jade Beutler. Jade is the CEO of Emerald Health Bioceuticals. Emerald Health Bioceuticals is a global leader in the research and development of plant-based phytocannabinoids that support the human ECS.
In the body the ECS is comprised of cell receptor sites called CB1 and CB2. We are interested in the compounds that affect these receptors directly and/or as precursors to these compounds that affect the ECS. Our body produces endocannabinoids. Dr. Mechoulam discovered two compounds in the body that affect the ECS, Anandimide and 2-AG. Anadamide and 2-AG are now known to play a main role in direct cell to cell communication.
Nature produces phytocannabinoids in plants. Phytocannabinoids are various plant compounds that have an effect on the ECS. The most well-known phytocannabinoids are THC and CBD from Cannabis Sativa L.
Many other plants produce phytocannabinoids. They are not the same compounds as found in cannabis. Thousands of plants and common herbs have been shown to have some type of effect on the ECS. Emerald Health Bioceuticals has extensive research into these other plants and their unique phytocannabinoids. Their unique focus has led to the creation of safe and effective nutritional supplements that do not contain CBD or THC.
