Englewood Cliffs, NJ—Unilever partnered with Label Insight to allow consumers to view fragrance ingredients found in more than 1,100 Unilever beauty and personal care products across 15 brands down to 0.01% of the product formula, according to a press release.

This includes, according to the press release, fragrance ingredients, which are required by U.S. regulations to be listed only as “fragrance” on packages. Unilever is updating its packaging labels in the U.S. to voluntarily list fragrance allergens according to current European Union labeling regulations.

Amanda Sourry, president of Unilever North America, said in the release, “We are more committed than ever to transparency and building trust in Unilever and our brands. With the completion of our fragrance disclosure initiative, people now have access to more detailed ingredient information for our products.”

Product-specific fragrance listings are available through SmartLabel™, an industry-wide digital platform that provides a method of getting more information about products. Customers can access SmartLabel™ by scanning the UPC barcode with the free SmartLabel™ app or visiting brand websites. The press release notes that this allows Unilever to provide explanations for each ingredient, such as the scent it imparts upon an ingredient.

Just as organic and natural are becoming mainstream, so is transparency.
