Salt Lake City, UT—The United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA) announced in a press release a new policy that allows companies engaged in the growing, manufacture, sale, and/or distribution of hemp extract/cannabinoids to become Executive members of the alliance. The release notes that companies that handle products with THC levels above 0.3% are excluded.

“While efforts at the state and federal level to clarify the legal status of hemp extract and cannabinoid products continue, UNPA believes it is in the interest of consumers, health professionals and relevant industries to establish a framework of practices and compliance standards for hemp extract/cannabinoid products,” said Loren Israelsen, UNPA President. “After months of development and review by our Hemp Extract/Cannabinoids Committee, UNPA completed and received Executive Committee approval to accept new Executive members in the hemp extract/cannabinoids category. We’ve established strict criteria to assess such companies’ compliance, quality, executive capabilities, adverse event reporting systems and other requirements to assure such members are best in class in this emerging category.”

The first company to take advantage of the new guidelines is Mile High Labs, a large-scale CBD ingredient and product manufacturer, according to a second press release. The company extracts exclusively from industrial hemp material.

Fenella Keig, Compliance Officer at Mile High Labs, said in the release: “We’re excited to be the first CBD company to join UNPA. The alliance is unparalleled in its expertise and commitment to the supplements industry. We look forward to working with UNPA leadership and other member organizations to create awareness of CBD and other hemp-derived products.”

Israelsen added: “We’re honored that Mile High Labs joins UNPA as our first hemp extracts/cannabinoid Executive member. The company has demonstrated a clear commitment to quality, science, and research, together with a world-class facility and a committed and competent management team. We look forward to their expertise and perspectives as we work together to promote the responsible sale and use of hemp-based products.”
