Secaucus, NJ—Lycored’s branded Lycomato tomato extract may help protect the skin from oxidative stress, according to a new study published inAntioxidants.

Researchers in Israel exposed human dermal fibroblasts to oxidative stress, which led to cell death and decreased pro-collagen secretion—but pre-treatment with Lycomato was found to reverse the effects of oxidative stress, in part by reducing the rise in MMP-1 secretion (an enzyme responsible for collagen damage) by around 50%. Lycomato completely restored pro-collagen secretion.

The researchers also looked at the effect of pre-treatment with rosemary extract, and found that it, too, decreased MMP-1 secretion and increased pro-collagen secretion.

The top finding: The effects of Lycomato and rosemary extract were heightened when they were combined.

Dr Karin Hermoni, Head of Science & Product at Lycored said: “We’ve long known about the many links between the components of our diet and the health of our skin. This study provides exciting new evidence that the carotenoids and other phytonutrients in Lycomato offer significant protection against the damage caused by oxidative stress. It also demonstrates that it’s a perfect partner for collagen in skin health supplements, and in anti-aging products in particular.”
