Benicia, CA—New data published in Nutrition Journal suggest that a branded joint health ingredient benefits certain individuals with arthritis.
Researchers from InterHealth Nutraceuticals and the University of California Davis Health System divided a group of 186 volunteers into three groups: one took a branded undenatured type II collagen (40 mg of UC-II from InterHealth Nutraceuticals, based here), the second took a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin (1,500 mg of glucosamine, 1,200 mg of chondroitin) and the third took a placebo for 180 days. Arthritis pain and symptoms were measured throughout the study according to the WOMAC Index, the Lequesne Functional Index and the Visual Analog Scale. All volunteers were ages 40–75 and had moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis of the knee; everyone recorded any use of rescue medication (acetaminophen) during the study.
At the end of the study, the UC-II group demonstrated a significant reduction in arthritis pain and other symptoms compared to the other groups. According to the researchers, supplementation with UC-II resulted in reductions of 41% in WOMAC pain, 40% in stiffness and 39% in physical function subscales compared to baseline.
