Looking at trends, the release notes that celery juice, oat milk, and street corn are on the rise; poke, avocado toast, and kale “remain trusty go-to dishes”; and kombucha and coconut water seem to on the decline.The release notes that plant-based and vegan options are exploding in popularity, as is demonstrated by the above numbers: “One thing is clear,” says the release, “plant-based foods are here to stay.” Vegetarian- and vegan-friendly dishes held 7 of the top 10 orders, as opposed to 3 of the top 10 in 2018—and vegan orders rose 27% in popularity in 2019 as compared to 2018, with the top five dishes being:
- Impossible burger
- Black bean burger
- Tofu
- Mushroom burger
- Jackfruit
Additionally, the release notes, in 2019, diners rounded up and donated more than $10 million between January and October to organizations including No Kid Hungry, the James Beard Foundation’s Women’s Leadership Programs, and NYC Kids RISE.
