Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) is a small annual plant native to southern Asian countries, the press release explains. It is also known askiryatain Hindi andchuan xin lianin Chinese. In Ayurveda, the dried leaves and shoots are used to treat fever, cough, bronchitis, inflammation, to name a few; in traditional Chinese medicine, it has been used as treatment for influenza, fever, cough, sore throat, and dysentery, among others.
In vitroand animal studies have found that andrographis has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, according to the press release. Research has focused largely on use for respiratory and digestive conditions, and results from human clinical trials and meta-analyses suggest that andrographis may be useful in treating upper respiratory symptoms associated with cold and flu and in reducing the frequency and severity of cough.
