Kelly Bloedorn is the project coordinator and content designer at Basil’s Harvest. She is a food systems professional trained in systems thinking as a foundation for program development and communications design. As a kid, Kelly loved to explore nature in her family’s backyard food garden- solidifying a lifelong curiosity in where food comes from, as well as native biodiversity, healthy ecosystems, and advocating for our natural environment. She earned her MS in Sustainable & Resilient Food Systems from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. An artist at heart, Kelly’s passion is working with teams to translate information into images and content that is engaging to a range of audiences.
Recent research that connects whole and minimally processed food’s role in microbiome responses and disease outcomes is reigniting the holistic approach, “food as medicine.” This exciting momentum is driving organizations like Basil's Harvest (BH), a Chicago-based non-profit, to lead groundbreaking initiatives in regional and regenerative food systems, including farm-to-institution programs and culinary medicine.
In 2022, BH founded the Coalition of Regenerative Ag, Food, & Health (CRAFH) bringing together a transdisciplinary team working at the intersection of food, farm, climate, and health—bridging siloed systems for systemic solutions.
In 2024, CRAFH partners—including researchers and health, environmental, culinary, and agricultural experts across the region—launched a knowledge assessment survey: “The Microbiome Around and Within Us-Soil to Humans.”
This survey aims to:
By establishing a new baseline of interdisciplinary knowledge, we’re paving the way for innovations that could foster positive community-wide health outcomes. Results of the survey will be valuable in shaping professional development initiatives, policies, and practices to support sustainable, health-promoting regional food systems, starting in the Midwest.
This is an exciting opportunity to consider food within the larger food system and support everyone, from farm to plate.
To take the survey, click here, or scan the QR code (at right). Please also circulate this link and encourage other food & farm professionals and healthcare professionals to do the same so together we can shape the future of our food system.
The Microbiome Around and Within Us-Soil to Humans Survey has been developed for clinicians/faculty as part of a broader research project with Jasia Steinmetz, Ph.D., RDN, CD at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
