OmniActive explained in a press release that the herbal formulation was shown to have a strong protective effect against OA via its multi-modal mechanism of action, producing significant reductions in inflammation, oxidative stress and collagen degradation.
- "Protective Effect of a Novel Highly Bioavailable Formulation of Curcumin in Experimentally Induced Osteoarthritis Rat Model," which focused on knee OA, a chronic and debilitating disease initiated by physical damage and accumulated oxidative stress, followed by exaggerated inflammation leading to cartilage damage. OmniActive explained that curcumin is a well-known anti-inflammatory agent that has been used in for management of knee OA, but bioavailability is an issue. "By improving the stability of curcumin under various pH conditions as found in the digestive tract," the company said, "OmniActive has developed a novel, highly bioavailable curcumin called Advanced UltraSOL Curcumin (AUC). This study confirmed the efficacy of this enhanced curcumin formulation on restoring joint architecture, and reducing joint swelling and inflammation using a well-established rat model of knee OA."

The company said: "In this study, OmniActive researchers evaluated the efficacy of a formulation consisting of several ingredients including the macular carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin isomers) on dry eye symptoms in a rat model. The formulation significantly improved tear volume, tear breakup time, and tear film integrity, while also reducing inflammation."
