New research has found that the blend of tomato and rosemary extracts in Lycored's Lycoderm ingestible skincare extract has a synergistic effect that may help balance skin cells’ response to environmental challenges, the company reported. According to a press release, the study shows the benefits of supplementation with tomato nutrients on top of a healthy diet, and demonstrates relevant mechanisms of action that support health and beauty across all skin types and age groups.

In a previous study, Lycoderm, which contains a combination of carotenoids and polyphenols including lycopene, phytoene, phytofluene, and carnosic acid, was shown to benefit overall skin condition and to visibly boost radiance and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The new research, published in Molecules, offers new insights into the extract's molecular mechanism, which the company said further validates the blend’s ability to support skin health at the cellular level.

Findings from the pre-clinical tests, as outlined in the release:
  • Phytonutrients in Lycoderm cooperate to inhibit inflammatory cytokines that lead to the degradation of skin collagen.
  • Lycoderm's patented combination of carotenoids and polyphenols inhibit the secretion of the cytokines and balance oxidative stress effectively than either tomato extract or rosemary leaf extract alone.
  • A group of young, healthy subjects began taking Lycoderm in addition to their regular diet, with blood tests taken two and three weeks after beginning supplementation; the average plasma concentration of the major tomato carotenoids almost doubled.
“When creating Lycoderm, we were aiming for the ultimate mix of carotenoids naturally present in the tomato alongside the polyphenols in natural rosemary leaf extract," said Karin Hermoni, Head of Product and Science at Lycored, in the release. "This research shines a light on how these phytonutrients work together to nourish the body from the inside out, helping to maintain skin health and wellness to achieve an ‘inner glow.’”
